Every Heart a Doorway – 2.8 “PLOTOCIDE, FLATINED” stars

Oh, calamity! This was SO PAINFUL to read!

This was supposed to be my precious, perfect blend “Magical Realism / Dark Fantasy / Horror” child. The one that had it all!

It was also supposed to be the perfect second “portal to other worlds” book of this fall, after Miss Peregrine!

BUT this was just a horrible plotocide and a nightmare of of flatlined characters!

I’m devastated!

About the Book

Every Heart a Doorway

Children have always disappeared under the right conditions; slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere… else.

But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children.

Nancy tumbled once, but now she’s back. The things she’s experienced… they change a person. The children under Miss West’s care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world.

But Nancy’s arrival marks a change at the Home. There’s a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it’s up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of the matter.

No matter the cost.

My little, fragil #bookworm heart is totally broken! I had fallen so hard with the IDEA of this book!

I finally get my hands on it, I take my time to lovingly caress its cover, its pages…. I start reading and… Total infatuation! The writing, the Gothic atmosphere, the darkness, the horror… SO MOI!

Then, to top it all, THE DIVERSITY! There were all the different races, ethnicity and sexual orientations of the human spectrum. If you can think of it, it was very likely represented here!

And the premise… Pure genius! Miss peregrine style, kids going through portals to other worlds. So freeeeeakingtastic!

I even ditch my teddy bear and slept at night hugging this book!

And then it started! And I had to watch it all, helpless, powerless, as the plot was merciless tortured and killed!

You can always kill my darlings, even some of my favorite characters but please, please, pretty please. DON’T KILL THE PLOT! I can’t read such a beautiful plot being assassinated like this! And all the little, innocent subplots! They were killed before they were even conceived. They never got to exist!

So all the diverse and wonderful characters are going to go through all these mysterious doors to other worlds… You can’t wait to know what they are going to do and…  The book becomes ALL and ONLY about the world and nothing else! It was an agony pretty much like this..

Book: “It’s hard to find the doors” Moi: uh-huh, Awesome! let’s see what the characters do now!

Book: The doors may open only once. Moi: uh-huh, great idea. Make it HARD for the characters! Let’s see what they do now!

Book: All the kids miss the worlds they went to! Moi: Hummm… OK! that makes sense. More drama! OK, now let’s move on, please. Let’s see how they find them!

Book: So, all the kids want to find the doors again. me: Hummm, OK. Mr. obvious, I already figured that out! I get it!

Book: But wait! I have pages and pages for you to read about the doors!

Moi: NOOOOOO  I said I get it! I get it! I get it! I GET IT!! PLEASE STOP! We are 60% in and that’s ALL you talked about! The freaking Doors and characters’ backstories!

And to make it worse, all these worlds and backstories weren’t as awesome and unique as I thought they were going to be either! Just a trail mix of retellings of Frankenstein and Dracula.

And the characters acted absolutely weird! Like in The Bad Beginning, weird!

FINALLY something happens. A bunch of these kids find a mutilated body and… What do they do? Do they scream in terror? Do they cry in despair? Do they tremble with anxiety because there is a sadistic killer around and they may be next?

They all go to their rooms and talk for another 30 pages about the doors and their worlds [OMG I almost pulled all my hair out]

Then another body is found and… repeat. See above. Kids talk MORE about the doors and the worlds while they pack the victim’s stuff. Like a bunch of emotional Flatliners, but alive.

BTW… I LOVED THAT MOVIE SO MUCH!! I Can’t wait to see the remake! In theaters TODAY!

So to end on a positive note, here is the trailer!

These characters are actually DEAD and showed more emotions than the characters on this book! LOL

What about you? Have your read this book? Did you like it?

Thank you for visiting!
