Danger has never looked quite so delicious…
Here I am, soooo freaking loyal to you and your writing Rebecca and you throw I don’t know how many 180s on me??? And I suffer from motion sickness! 🙁
What kind of behavior is that??? So…. Rebecca you are grounded!!
So… this is a 2-star review. No wait. a 3.2-star. No wait a ZERO. A DNF. No wait a 3.8-star. Nope A 2-8 star. No wait. A 4.5!!! Nope… a 4.3-star!
[how did you like that huh??? all the ups and downs?? not nice huh?] 😉
You don’t do that to someone that suffers from motion sickness!
After all those ups and downs I was all dizzy and puking! 🙁
Reading Mercury Striking was like getting on a roller coaster. And I don’t mean the plot twists and the action infused excitement [we’ll get to that] I mean how I really, physically, feel about roller coasters: I get all excited, get on, get sick, but then I get on again, and… repeat.
When I saw a dystopian by Rebecca coming out last year and I saw heaven. I saw a 10K-star review! I was so excited! I pre-ordered the book AND I requested the ARC [two things I usually don’t do!]. Well, I just went insane!
So I get the ARC… and I devour the first pages in two minutes and… stop. Read some more, and stop again. I check the kindled header to make sure… yup “Mercury Striking” it read. I frown. “hummm” I read some more. Stop. “Can’t be”. I check again. Yup, “written by Rebecca Zanetti” it says. I check the reviews. I see a couple 4 and 5 stars reviews . Others not so good, many DNFs. One review says “It took me forever to get into this one. I’d say the 50% mark or just passed it”
“So others had the same issue huh? I’m not crazy” I think. I have read 12% in two days!. Unheard of! especially for a Rebecca’s book. I am tripping over the words and going over the same paragraphs over and over again.
But “this was Rebecca!” I think. So I have to give it a try!
So I painfully go through a lot of internal monologue from the hero and lots telling about the insta-attraction he feels.
For god sake they were together for an hour
in which she was sleeping most of the time
and maybe had a five minute conversation!
How can you be crazy about her already?!!
I faithfully keep reading through more telling that didn’t make sense at all, just waiting to see the two MCs together because there is no one like Rebecca to write love scenes. And there they are… together again. Another WTH moment! The heroine just wakes up and finds the hero in her bed. Just like that. They had met a few hours ago! So I check and count the pages to see if she had missed something. Nope. I hadn’t.
This is crazzzzy
[Big rolling of my eyes]
Then I remember Nikki one-start review: “HE BEAT HER WITH A BELT. I keep reading get to that scene. I cringe. I abandon it and move on to other books.
But good reviews keep raining on me, mostly because I can’t stop obsessing about the book and I keep checking the reviews. 🙂
So I fool myself into thinking the first 20% of the book was a bad dream and read it again. And finish it! 🙂
And of course it takes me about two hours to write this review because I really don’t know what to say! So here is.. a compendium of mini reviews.!
20%: in lots of ugh ugh ugh wth moments. Many “Who wrote this? Not Rebecca!” moments.
25%: The story gets good enough and I can’t really say the writing is BAD anymore. It is just not her usual style.
30%: ZOOOOM another loop in the roller coaster. I’m upside down again, nauseous but happier! Now it sounds more like Rebecca and it all makes sense and moves smoothly. I’m so in love again I want to ask Rebecca to marry me.
35% Oh nooo the ghost is back! Some else wrote this part I’m so… soooooo… soooooo… speechless I guess!
40ish% pheww Rebecca is back!
60% WOW this could be a 5-star! I wish I could forget the first 20%!
OK. Now I’ll stop all this craziness and make a summary for you. I already made peace with the fact Rebecca has been possessed. So, now I’ll tell you about THEIR book [yes, the book that Rebecca’s and whoever possessed her wrote]
The writing… when Rebecca writes… pure awesomeness! Then when the other entity writes.. hummm… still pretty good! My theory? Rebecca was trying to give this series a complete new style and went all multiple personalities on me.
The premise… LOVE IT! A dystopian. The world ravaged by a pandemic. An urban war in a a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles. No Zombies [THANK GOD! I don’t think I could have handle zombies too!] but Rippers. Very interesting alternative to zombies. What is not to love?
The Plot, the story arc… pretty good. well-thought, action packed, suspenseful…
World-building… scene development and characterization… 5 stars! So Rebecca! with her so-hard-to-find balance between building the world and developing the characters. The characters by themselves may not be super complex but when they come together BOOM! Earthquakes. Heat. Explosions. Sparks flying everywhere. Rebecca is SO GOOD at writing romance! 🙂
My favorite quote…
If there are bullets, I’m between you and them. If you get taken, I’m hunting you down till my last breath. And if you end up in hell, I’ll storm the fucking place until the fires go out.
The second half of the book was a solid 4.5 stars but because of all the ups and downs… 4.3 stars overall.
I DO love what Rebecca’s new writing style seems to be evolving into. It’s worth all the growing pains. So, I’m probably finishing this series in the summer if I stick to my plan to read some romance. I bet your are like “What???” All that whining for nothing?! Oh well… yes.
It’s Rebecca after all!
