People, meet THE VOICE people!
This is an absolute masterpiece of writing (OMG the voice!) and world-building!
About the book
[Public Library book]
Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations.
Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children.
But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity already reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.
Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity’s overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society’s ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies… even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.
This book is literally and figuratively out of this world!
Some of my favorite quotes:
We grew together, and now are grown. In her eyes, I see my heart. In her breath, I hear my soul. She is my land. She is my kin. My love.
I am the Reaper and death is my shadow.
‘I live for the dream that my children will be born free. That they will be what they like. That they will own the land their father gave them.’
‘I live for you,’ I say sadly.
She kisses my cheek. ‘Then you must live for more.’
You do not follow me because I am the strongest. Pax is. You do not follow me because I am the brightest. Mustang is. You follow me because you do not know where you are going. I do.
The measure of a man is what he does when he has power.
And to think it took me MORE THAN A YEAR [yup!] to finish Red Rising!
Why? Because Reading Red Rising was like eating two pounds of the best, the finest, the most exquisite and expensive gorgonzola cheese. 🙂
You see it in your cheese plate and you go for it! You try the first bite and your taste buds explode. Your eyes close in ecstasy. You try to silent a moan [because you are in a dinner party!] but you fail. Everyone stares at you. Mothers tug theirs kids closer. Oops! You just embarrassed yourself but still you can’t stop savoring it and moaning because each bite takes you to closer to heaven.
But a few bites later you are like… hummmm… “Not sure I can take more of this”. Your taste buds and your brain have temporarily short-circuited.
What? You hate this delicious cheese now? No way! It is THE BEST thing you ever tasted in your life. You just need a break.
You take a long sip of wine to wash it down [or a full glass in my case] and move to the other morsels in the cheese plate to give your taste buds a break: juice grapes, sweet figs, earthy olives…
Red Rising was a delicacy that changed my reader’s tastes forever. I didn’t used to like Sci-Fi until I read Red Rising. But I had to have it in small doses as I have Gorgonzola: thinly spread over crackers or crumbled in salads. So I had to take frequent breaks. Which brings me to my only complaint: I wish some parts of the book had been shorter. That’s it. A wish. Not even a complaint. I should not have said “a complaint”!
No flaws. This book was PERFECTION.
After reading the first pages a was speechless. I was in a world that was both exquisitely fantastic but so well-crafted that is was also incredibly real and PALPABLE. You could almost swear it exists! And it was all described to exquisite detail in a way that was thorough but still subtle, perfectly waved with the story so it wouldn’t slow the action.
WHAT AN AWESOME JOB PIERCE!
Holy crap! YOU ARE A GENIUS!
I don’t think I’ve ever read a world like Red Rising’s with a story and character arcs to match! The sweet and tragic love story of Darrow and Eo is palpable too. It JUST belongs to that world. Is the perfect result of the primitive but rich culture of the Reds of Mars and the brutal hierarchical society that oppress them, which is as vast and complex as the solar system that houses it!
Well what else can I say? This is a masterpiece. A classic that I will remember my whole life. I will reread it, I will read it to my kids and to my grand kids. I’d read it to my neighbor if she let me! I’d read it to my dog if I had one 🙂
I can’t wait to finish this series!
[which I haven’t because for some stupid reason I’m scared of finishing it!]
What about you readers and bloggers friends? Have you read Red Rising?
NO? NO?? Can you call me at your earliest convenience so I can read it to you? 🙂
You did? ?? Did your brain short-circuited like mine???
What about you my writers friends. What would you give for a voice like Pierce’s?
