Penryn & the End of Days series – BEST URBAN FANTASY EVER!

Because I haven’t found anything better!

Dear bookworms,

Today I wanted to tell you about…

I have read many [Many!] urban fantasies and I have yet to find a series I like more than this one!

About the Books

It’s been six weeks since angels of the apocalypse descended to demolish the modern world. Street gangs rule the day while fear and superstition rule the night. When warrior angels fly away with a helpless little girl, her seventeen-year-old sister Penryn will do anything to get her back.

Anything, including making a deal with an enemy angel.

Raffe is a warrior who lies broken and wingless on the street. After eons of fighting his own battles, he finds himself being rescued from a desperate situation by a half-starved teenage girl.

Traveling through a dark and twisted Northern California, they have only each other to rely on for survival. Together, they journey toward the angels’ stronghold in San Francisco where she’ll risk everything to rescue her sister and he’ll put himself at the mercy of his greatest enemies for the chance to be made whole again.

In this sequel to the bestselling fantasy thriller, Angelfall, the survivors of the angel apocalypse begin to scrape back together what’s left of the modern world.

When a group of people capture Penryn’s sister Paige, thinking she’s a monster, the situation ends in a massacre. Paige disappears. Humans are terrified. Mom is heartbroken.

Penryn drives through the streets of San Francisco looking for Paige. Why are the streets so empty? Where is everybody? Her search leads her into the heart of the angels’ secret plans where she catches a glimpse of their motivations, and learns the horrifying extent to which the angels are willing to go.

Meanwhile, Raffe hunts for his wings. Without them, he can’t rejoin the angels, can’t take his rightful place as one of their leaders. When faced with recapturing his wings or helping Penryn survive, which will he choose?

End of Days

is the explosive conclusion to Susan Ee’s bestselling Penryn & the End of Days trilogy. After a daring escape from the angels, Penryn and Raffe are on the run. They’re both desperate to find a doctor who can reverse the twisted changes inflicted by the angels on Raffe and Penryn’s sister. As they set off in search of answers, a startling revelation about Raffe’s past unleashes dark forces that threaten them all.

When the angels release an apocalyptic nightmare onto humans, both sides are set on a path toward war. As unlikely alliances form and strategies shift, who will emerge victorious? Forced to pick sides in the fight for control of the earthly realm, Raffe and Penryn must choose: Their own kind, or each other?

Angelfall and World After are the action-packed stories of Penryn, a seventeen years old girl who has to rescue her handicapped little sister abducted in a desolated post-apocalyptic San Francisco, plagued with street gangs and other dangers, after the world has been destroyed by enraged angels. WOW!

A post-apocalyptic/dystopian setting, fast-paced action, exceptional imagery, a strong, independent, resourceful heroine (Penryn)… Seriously I couldn’t put these books down.

Another great thing about these books? They are well-written and edited self-published books! kudos to self-publish authors for bringing up the game and shaping the publishing world! In her blog Susan talks about being an indie author

“I couldn’t wait the year or two it would take for it to go through the traditional publishing route, nor could I stomach the thought that the only readers during that time would be people who read the story for the purpose of weighing and measuring it for its commercial value. So I published it myself without ever reaching out to agents or publishers. It was my message in a bottle attempt to connect… I walked around in a happy daze, thinking about the people who voluntarily spent hours of their lives sharing my dream of Penryn & Raffe. They enjoyed it! How amazing is that? I had found my tribe.” – Susan Ee

Her books are just a superb fast and furious roller coasters. The imagery is so good that is like watching a movie! And the world-building… OMG THIS WORLD!

These books are definitely plot driven. The plot makes this series a total unputdownable!

You are in a constant “omg! What’s next?”

But even though is plot driven the characters are complex, unique and realistic. Besides Penryn, the brave heroine, one of my favorites characters is her schizophrenic mom. Raff, the hero, doesn’t say much throughout the entire book but the scarce dialogs between him and  Penryn are really fun, for instance…

“I never kid about my warrior demigod status.”
“Oh. My. God.” I lower my voice, having forgotten to whisper. “You are nothing but a bird with an attitude. Okay, so you have a few muscles, I’ll grant you that. But you know, a bird is nothing but a barely evolved lizard. That’s what you are.” ― (Raffe and Penryn) Susan Ee, Angelfall

The romance is there but understated which is perfect for this genre, since this is not a romance book.

Just a warning… This series is really dark fantasy/horror. There are seriously gory scenes: murder and surgical alterations of children, dismembering, and cannibalism. Be aware. This is not for everyone. Definitely not for children. There is also an unorthodox approach to Angels and Christian mythology and blurry lines between good and evil. If you are very religious you may not like it.   Also, I wish the series had explained batter how and why the apocalypse happened and then there is the ends… not necessarily “happily ever after” endings; they may leave you a little dissatisfied.

Thank you for visiting!
