A #Foodie’s Tale – Authentic Sangría

Because there is only ONE thing better than wine…

If you mix wine with other secret elements you come up with this ambrosia-like concoction call SANGRIA. 🙂

Our family is from Spain so of course we LOVE Sangria. We serve it in almost every special occasions or just.. because! 🙂

But… What is Sangría???? This is what Wikipedia says:

Sangria (English /sæŋˈɡriːə/, Portuguese pronunciation: [sɐ̃ˈɡɾi.ɐ]; Spanish: sangría [saŋˈɡɾi.a]) is an alcoholic beverage of Spanish origin. A punch, the sangria traditionally consists of red wine and chopped fruit, often with other ingredients such as orange juice or brandy.

This is what you need to know about Sangría: An authentic sangria should have red or white wine [I know it sounds like a given but I have actually been served sangria with NO wine whatsoever!] a sparkling drink [seltzer water, lemon soda, apple cider, sparkling wine, etc] and LOTs of fruits.

Those concoctions made wine and orange juice and a single slide of orange or a cherry floating there like a shipwrecked sailor…

An authentic sangria has real chunks of fruit. LOTS OF THEM!

But FEAR NOT! Because, you know who is really, REALLY famous for her Sangrías? ME!!! So, the only recipes you’ll ever need are mine 🙂

Today I finally get to share with you my basic recipe. Just keep in mind this is just like my cooking. Not an exact science.

I chopped fruits [my favorite are berries which I smashed a little too] and marinate in wine a simple syrup. I put the wine,  syrup and the fruit in ice cube containers and freeze it. Then I add the frozen cubes to a jar, I fill about ¾ of the jar with wine, and add about ¼ cup of brandy.

Here is the secret… Just before I’m ready to serve I add the sparkling drink and served in chilled sangria glasses with more frozen fruit [never enough fruit]. No matter what recipe you are using Sangria ALWAYS has to be COLD!!! VERY COLD.

Soon I’ll share other seasonal recipes I have developed like Winter Sangria, Spring Sangria, Summer Sangria, Fall Sangria, Halloween Sangria, Thanksgiving Sangria, Christmas Sangria. I have a sangria for every occasion.

Thank you for visiting!
